Aluminium Wire ( Al )

Density : 2,70 gr/cm3
Resistivity : 2,82x10-8 Ωm

Aluminium wire is the second most widely used non-ferrous metal in cable industry after Copper.  Aluminium wire is used as insulated and un-insulated.  Aluminium wire is less conductive than Copper. Resistivity of Aluminium wire is %65 more then copper wire.  Cross section area 16,50mm2 Aluminium wire is needed where 10mm2   copper wire is used.  Still,  Aluminium has weight and cost advantage over Copper wire.  Aluminium wiring  is used in public lighting because of this reason.  Aluminium wire is mostly used in overhead power distribution with steel wire combined.  Typical over-head distribution cable layout is steel wire in the middle and 3-4 layers of Aluminuim wire stranded over steel core.  Aluminium wire is also used as armouring wire for single core power cables.  Another area of cable industry is power cables up to 0,6/1kV.  Here, Aluminium is chosen because of cost efficiency and light weight.  Aluminium wire is also commmonly used as braiding material in coaxial cables. Aluminium wire is used in cable industry in different forms.
Flat:
Rarely used. For special applications where creeping is not an issue and light weight is required.

Round: The most  common form of Aluminium wire used in cable industry. It can be used as solid single wire or different strand compositions.
Sector Shape :  Used mostly in power cable production.  Purpose of sector shape is to get better proportioned final structure and roundness.  By using sector shaped Aluminium wire; isolation, jacket thickness and final diameter of finished cable is reduced.
