Polyurethane was produced for
the first time in Germany in 1937. Polyurethane is a thermosetting polymer.
TPU- Thermoplastic polyurethane came later. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)
was invented by "Lubrizol Engineered Polymers" in 1959, while the company was
still called "BF Goodrich". Since TPU's invention, Lubrizol has continued to
innovate the material, creating the first Non-Halogenated Flame Retardant TPU
and the first Static Dissipative TPU.1
TPU is used in
automotive cables, trailer cables , crane cables, conveyor cables, and special applications of power cables.
It has many advantages. TPU has excellent resistance to oils, solvents,
greases and gasoline. Polyurethane has excellent electrical insulating
properties and used successfully in many wire and cable harness assemblies in
automotive industry, and household appliances. It has
outstanding resistance to oxygen, ozone, sunlight and general weather
conditions as well. TPU is shown as "11Y" either it is
used as core insulation or jacketing for VDE types- as in 11YSL11Y . In
harmonised coding TPU is shown as "Q" as in
H07BQ-F.
Keep in mind that TPU granule has to be pre-heated (dried) before extrusion. Temperature settings of extruder must be precise. Temperature of entrance and exit should be level.
